The Fool

Cat in a Nutshell

I

n a Nutshell     Delightfully Humorous!

Anyone who enjoyed the exceptional production of Robinson Crusoe and the Cursed Pirates will recognize that same quality in The Fool. This is another terrific HOG/adventure game imbued with humor and fun. Like Robinson Crusoe, the opening sequence is some of the best game animation out there today. The story isn’t all that creative (every day Joe must slay dragon to win princess) but the amusing take the developers follow makes it so much more. There is a good mix of HOG and adventure style play as well as creative puzzles to solve. The music perfectly fits the game’s renaissance atmosphere and the narration is well done. The biggest drawback for me was found in the HOG scenes which consisted of basic junkpiles filled with anachronistic items like microwave ovens, cameras and plastic toys. For a game with such high production values otherwise, I found that detail a little disappointing. The best thing about The Fool is like its predecessor, it’s loads of fun to play. Don’t miss clicking on characters just to see what they’ll say!! I recommend not missing this one!!

This was a fun to play adventure HOG that is very light-hearted and a nice change of pace from all the darker offerings (although I was bummed about the dragon). Very pleasant music enhances search scenes which are already lots of fun with great animations and whimsical backgrounds. I loved the idea that part of what you have to find is appropriate clothing to gain admittance to various locations – nice touch! Don't be fooled by the "Strategy Guide" link on the opening page – it puts you onto BFG to buy it. I did need a WT a few times (the one on GZ is very good) and did skip some puzzles. I would have liked more complete instructions for some of them. Solid 4 stars.

The fool is a fun romp into the renaissance. I was lucky enough to beta this and I see that they did indeed inprove upon a good game since then. Like the other reviewers, I am disappointed that it did not go on longer, as this is a good combo FROG/HOG and humourous to boot. I enjoyed collecting the items and dressing the fool for his journey. I would recommend this game for relaxing play.

I liked this game from the get-go–I'm a fan of medieval/Renaissance lore. This is from the same developers who gave us Robinson Crusoe and the Cursed Pirates– I'm sold! Thirty minutes into the demo and I've already had a good time. Great intro, good options (including cursor choice), nice music (lutes and flutes, just what you'd expect in that day and age); colorful graphics, fair but challenging hidden-object scenes, and the dialogue and conversations have good humor. The W/T counts 76 pages, so that may bode well for game length. I would ROFL while enjoying the second Robinson Crusoe game–I expect to be doing more of that with this one!
