In order to have an actual relationship between two individuals, they must have a common ancestor, or to put it another way, each individual must be able to trace their ancestry back directly to the same individual.  If you would like to better understand how these relationships are determined, see the article titled "The Meaning of Relationships."

You can use the chart below to figure out the relationship between two individuals if you know the common ancestor.

Using the row and column in blue, first locate each individual with respect to the common ancestor. For example, if one is a 2nd Great Grandson, and the other is a 3rd Great Granddaughter,  you can follow column 5 down to where it meets row 6, and you will see that the two are 3rd cousins, once removed.
